Awolnation at Stir Cove

We were treated with beautiful weather Friday night, and Stir Cove treated us with a cast full of characters.

Act I: Irontom

Born out of Los Angeles, CA, Irontom consists of 5 dudes, all very talented in their own right.  These guys were super high energy and really kicked off the evening in the right way.

You know how some people talk with their hands? Well, lead singer, Harry Hayes, sings with his whole body. This guy was so animated and made us feel their sound. I don’t think the showgoers really expected such great entertainment from the opening band. But every single one of us were moving. You couldn’t help but move. They really pumped us up for what was to come.  Fun fact:  lead guitarist, Zach Irons, is the son of Jack Irons. Who is he? None other than the founding drummer of the Red Hot Chili Peppers! To say the music bug runs in the family is an understatement. What a way to start the night!

Act II: PVRIS (pronounced Paris)

Hailing from Lowell, Massachusetts, this 4-piece kept up with the already pumping adrenaline.  Lead singer Lyndsey Gunnulfsen’s voice was intoxicating. The Cove was really starting to fill in with a mostly younger audience. Although, there were some moms in front of me who were totally grooving, really digging what PVRIS had to offer.

This chick was badass. She had a great set of pipes and even gave us a taste of the new ballad she wrote, “Beautiful. The boys supporting her vocals were also a pleasant surprise. Even through a malfunction where the drummer lost his kick, these guys really rocked it. Solid musicians and a solid performance.

What a show. As the night grew later and the crowd grew bigger, we were all ready for it.  AWOLNATION is a fairly young band themselves, having released their first album in 2010. But they play like they’ve been doing it for 25 years.

I was so intrigued with the wide range of music they played for us. The first song was mainly instrumental, while the second had the essence of a screamo band, and after that it seemed like I was at a dance party! It was so much fun! I really didn’t know much of them before last night, but their following is strong and true.

Lead singer, Aaron Bruno had these piercing eyes and at times it felt like he was peering into my soul...but in a good way. A seriously awesome performance from a band that I hope sticks around for years to come.

Once again, just a great time at Stir Cove. I love going to the shows where I don’t know what to expect, but then I’m blown away and the talent they bring in. You may not know the band, but don’t let that stop you from buying the tickets and seeing the show. You never know when you’re going to find your new favorite band. Stir Cove continues to be one of my favorite local venues. Thanks again to the staff and I can’t wait to see you next time!
